The Story of Promadent & the BiSS Software
Promadent was founded in 2018 with one clear mission: to launch our own software project. As 3D printing became increasingly important in the digital dental world, we realized that the solutions available on the market just didn’t cut it. They weren’t customizable enough, not intuitive enough, and definitely not fast enough.
In short: they just weren’t “Promadent enough.”
So our team of developers and dental technicians sat down together and created a concept that truly met our needs—and then turned it into digital reality. In those early days, the project thrived on the support of our beta testers, whose continuous feedback helped shape our idea into a real product. And eventually, we reached the crucial question every project faces sooner or later:
What do we call this thing?
How the Name Was Born (and Why an Alien Was Involved)
During initial tests, we trimmed scans to prepare them for socketing—and suddenly ended up with a shape that looked surprisingly alien-like. That little creature became an inside joke and, briefly, a candidate for our software mascot.
While we were in the middle of a huge brainstorming phase, one of our programmers—who had very little dental background but a very practical mindset—casually suggested:
“Why not just call it ‘Biss’?”
Our reaction: “Why BiSS? Where did that come from?”
His explanation:
“Well, you load a scan with a bite. And then you work on that bite.”
From a technical standpoint, that was… let’s say somewhat accurate. And yes, the name did sound a bit plain at first. But then he added:
“If one of the biggest companies in the world can call a text editor simply ‘Word,’ then we can definitely name our software—made to work with a bite—‘BiSS,’ right?”
Touché.
Simple. Clear. Memorable.
And we loved it. That was the moment the BiSS software was officially born.
